Hawthorne Valley is pleased to feature local social entrepreneur Melissa Auf der Maur in the latest episode of Roots to Renewal: a 50th Anniversary podcast. Melissa is the co-founder and director of Basilica Hudson, a nonprofit multidisciplinary art center in Hudson, NY, and an artist, musician, photographer and writer – probably best known in musical circles for her turn as the bass player for the band Hole from 1994-1999.
“We at Hawthorne Valley have admired Melissa and Tony’s work at the Basilica since it began in 2010, and are fortunate to have them as part of our community in Columbia County,” says Martin Ping, Hawthorne Valley Executive Director. “Basilica’s mission is very much aligned with ours when it comes to supporting the arts and addressing the important environmental and social needs of our time, and it’s been exciting to watch their work grow and thrive.”

In this episode, Melissa and Hawthorne Valley Executive Director Martin Ping have a fun, and wide-ranging conversation as they touched on everything from Melissa’s musical career, to the origin story of Basilica Hudson, to the impact of gentrification on the city of Hudson and its surrounding communities, to the role the city of Montreal played in her formative years.
Melissa says of the Basilica, “Connecting the infrastructure with the heart…it's like the combination of taking responsibility for your material presence as well as deep mindful care and how you gather humans and souls and, you know, that's obviously why the arts is so essential to us is that it's the connection to the heart.”
