Hawthorne Valley Waldorf High School
International Student Information 国际学生信息
Our mission at Hawthorne Valley Waldorf High School is to offer students an innovative and academically rigorous liberal arts program rooted in the humanities and sciences that serves to cultivate the social responsibility, personal integrity, intellectual curiosity, and practical capacities that will best prepare our students for meeting the challenges and opportunities of the world today.
Our faculty consists of teachers who are specialists in their subjects who challenge, excite, and engage young men and women, guiding them towards knowledge and self-discovery.
Our students prepare diligently for college and other post-secondary options.
Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School began over 40 years ago on our dairy farm when a small group of pioneering Waldorf teachers moved to Harlemville from New York City. Since it was started, the school has been committed to providing a high quality education founded in Waldorf pedagogy, which seeks to educate the whole child by engaging the heart and hands in addition to the head.
Since our humble beginning, we have become a widely respected and well-established educational community. There are more than 50 faculty and staff members at Hawthorne Valley serving approximately 190 families and over 300 students from nursery through grade twelve.
ACADEMIC PROGRAM 学术项目
At Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School, we view students as co-creators of their learning experience: classes are designed to promote active critical thinking skills as well as the mastery of specific subject material.
We value and promote class discussions, independent projects, and question formation over rote memorization and standardized testing, an approach which has routinely led college professors to comment on how prepared Waldorf students are for deep thinking and creative problem solving.
Our school day begins with the Main Lesson, a one-and-a-half hour in-depth look at a specific subject. Students rotate every 3 – 4 weeks between Main Lesson subjects, which cover topics in math, science, literature, and history. By focusing on a single subject intensively students are able to penetrate the material in a deeper way.
In each case, the Main Lesson uses a variety of learning methods (spoken word, art, movement, and academic instruction) to investigate the subject at hand.
In addition to Main Lesson subjects, students also have weekly academic skills-based classes in foreign language, math, English, and history throughout the school year. The high school program also features art, drama, music, and movement scheduled as weekly classes and/or in art blocks throughout the school year. Our athletics program offers opportunities for all students to participate in competitive sports in basketball, volleyball, soccer, and cross-country running.
We seek to guide students on their path of self discovery, to help them become more well-balanced human beings, and to ensure that they are well-prepared for acceptance at the top colleges and universities in America.
Located in the historic Hudson River Valley, our school is ideally situated on a 900-acre Biodynamic® farm surrounded by beautiful views of the nearby Catskill and Berkshire Mountains. Both natural beauty and cultural riches surround us, providing wonderful opportunities for our students, families, and teachers. The school is 2.5 hours north of New York City.
Our main building houses beautiful classrooms, including a science lab, several art studios, a band and music room, a library, and a textile weaving studio.
Other facilities on campus include a practical arts facility (stained glass, pottery, stone carving and woodworking), a metalwork-forge workshop, an assembly hall, and many working farm buildings. There is a popular organic/natural foods farm store on campus which sells a wide range of products, including fresh produce grown on the farm itself. The grounds surrounding our buildings offer hiking trails past woods, meadows and ponds.
