The Hawthorne Valley Cross Country team had another impressive showing in Patroon Conference competition Tuesday at the Roeliff Jansen Park. Girls varsity runner, junior Charlotte Kowalski notched her second first place finish in the class in as many weeks, with senior Sylvie Bergquist finishing second in the class. The HVS boys varsity team notched three more team wins vs. Hudson, Germantown (forfeit) and host Taconic Hills. The boys team is undefeated for the season in conference competition at 6-0. Freshman Oliver Towe logged his second consecutive second place finish of the season and broke the 20 minute mark for the first time in his career. Senior Gaetano Hamilton recorded his second top five finish of the season and four other HVS boys runners were top 10 finishers for the meet.
Our younger runners continue to impress in conference competition as eighth graders Thomas Madey and Theo Bergquist, and seventh grader Alex Beck finished first, second and third respectively in the boys modified class. Two members of our sixth grade runners club, Simon Towe and Owen Beck were allowed by host Taconic Hills to audit the modified meet and rounded out a top five sweep of the boys modified class for the Hawthorne Valley runners.
Cross Country Coach Jim Gibbons said he’s very pleased with the continued growth and enthusiasm demonstrated by this year’s runners. “For the second consecutive week, every one of our runners lowered his or her individual running time from previous bests. That’s the test of improvement and commitment in a sport like cross country. Our runners continue to pass that test every practice and meet.” Next up for HVS runners is a Patroon Conference dual meet against Taconic Hills, Cairo-Durham and host Windham Ashland-Jewett on Tuesday, September 21.
