Cultivating a Lifelong Enthusiasm for Learning
At Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School, we strive to create a healthy and balanced learning environment – one where children build living connections to the natural world while cultivating practical capacities, a sense of social responsibility, and the personal excellence needed to meet the challenges of the future.
Our 500-acre K-12 campus is surrounded by the cultivated fields, forests and gardens of Hawthorne Valley’s 900-acre Biodynamic® farm, just off the Taconic Parkway. The beauty of farm life and the rhythms of nature’s seasons provide exceptional educational resources built into the founding ideals of Hawthorne Valley.
Real, hands-on learning experiences enhance the already rich Waldorf curriculum with practical lessons drawn directly from life. An enhanced curriculum integrated with artistic creativity draws on the natural resources of our unique learning environment.
Educational research and artistic expression continue through Hawthorne Valley’s Farmscape Ecology Program, the Center for Social Research, Walking the dog Theater, and other initiatives – helping to cultivate practical skills, a reverence for life, and the power of initiative through firsthand scientific and artistic experiences. All of this is enhanced through an intimate connection with everything that is the Valley.
“I love that my children are learning academics in such innovative ways: gaining a deep understanding of geometry with a class building project…or an astronomy block capped off by a campout [spent] mapping the night sky and drawing the constellations.
It’s a magical place to be a student.” ~Christina Lowery, HVS Parent
