Congratulations to Solomon Bergquist (’20) on winning First Prize for Fiction/Short Story in the 2017 Young Writers’ Contest hosted by Spencertown Academy in conjunction with its annual Festival of Books. Bergquist won for his humorous short story “The Rebbe of Tyeliv”. He has been invited, along with the other contest winners, to read from his work at the Festival of Books, on Labor Day weekend. This year’s contest entries were read and judged in a blind semi-final and finalist process by Jamie Cat Callan, author of numerous essays and works of nonfiction, including “Bonjour Happiness” and “French Women Don’t Sleep Alone,” David Highfill , executive editor at William Morrow, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, and Daphne Kalotay, novelist, short story writer and author of “Russian Winter” and “Sight Reading.” Ms. Callan and Mr. Highfill are residents of Columbia County.
